California History
The first California chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, was organized in Los Angeles. Xi Alpha was chartered on the campus of Occidental College in 1937. The chartering members were: Soror Helen Chappel Smith, Soror Gertrude Blassingale, Soror C. Pear, Soror Jocelyn Watkins, and Soror Vivian Boswell Fisher.
The 2nd chapter in California was Gamma Beta. It was chartered at the University of California, Berkeley in 1942. Gamma Beta was unique, as it's membership was comprised of different colleges in Northern California colleges until 1983, when Nu Mu was chartered at San Francisco State University.
The first graduate chapter in California was Beta Eta Zeta of Los Angeles. In 1947, they helped host the 1st Boule' in the Pacific Region. Gamma Sigma Zeta, also of Los Angeles, was chartered a few years later. In 1955 the Sorors of Beta Eta Zeta and Gamma Sigma Zeta voted to merge into one chapter, later to be chartered Alpha Psi Zeta. Alpha Psi Zeta is the largest chapter in the state of California.

The second graduate chapter was chartered as the sponsoring chapter to Gamma Beta. Gamma Epsilon Zeta was chartered in October of 1947 in Berkeley, CA. In the same year, Gamma Eta Zeta was chartered in Oakland, CA and both chapters served the East Bay area until 1954 when they decided to combine their chapters. In 1954, the members of both chapters chartered as Epsilon Phi Zeta of Berkeley/ Oakland.
Delta Delta Zeta was the 5th graduate chapter chartered in California. They were chartered on May 14, 1949 and are the oldest chapter in California. They have served the city and county of San Francisco for more than 70 years. They hosted the first Boule’ held in Northern California in 1959 .

The State of California is now home to over 36 graduate & undergraduate chapters and is residence to the home chapter of the 23rd International President, Sheryl P. Underwood.
